November 2025
Internal redecoration has started! Thanks to a generous grant from Honiton Town Council, we have been able to kick-off a project to repair and repaint interior parts of the building that are beginning to show their age. Work will be completed over a number of weeks as we aim to minimise disruption for our users.
October 2025
We had been wanting to replace the rotten and draughty windows at the front of the building for some time and were delighted to be able to finally undertake this work during the October half term period. The new double-glazed windows greatly improve the appearance of the front of the building and will be much more energy efficient. We are grateful to Otter Windows who carried out the work and Honiton United Charities and the Allhallows Charity who funded the project.
August 2025
The end of August saw the retirement of our Chair and founder Trustee, Mike Jones. Mike has served the CUB with unwavering dedication since the very beginning. Along with his wife, Clare, who was our Building Manager, they have been a formidable team who have worked tirelessly though thick and thin to keep the CUB open and allow it to thrive. To mark their departure, the trustees held a cream tea in their honour and presented them with a range of gifts. They leave with our heartfelt thanks.
August/September 2025
In line with our ongoing commitment to make our building as accessible as possible, we were pleased to be able to install a hearing loop in the main hall. This was made possible by grants from the Norman Family Trust, the David Gibbon Trust and donations from the 729 Club and one of our trustees. This funding also allowed us to purchase a projector, screen and PA system for the hall.
September 2025
We were delighted to welcome Paul Quick as our new Chair of Trustees. Many will know Paul as the owner of Twin Tigers Martial Arts and Boxing Gym in Honiton. He brings with him a wealth of experience, a deep knowledge of the local community and commitment to support under-privileged and struggling groups. Kate Quick has also agreed to join us as our new Building Manager. She shares Paul’s energy and enthusiasm to develop the CUB as an essential community asset.
January - March 2025
March 2025 saw the completion of one of our most ambitious projects to date, namely the implementation of a number of measures to reduce our carbon consumption. The project, which spanned several months, was ably overseen by our then Building Lead, Chris Doran. Utilising a grant provided by the Carbon Action Fund and administered by East Devon Council, we were able to:
· Install solar panels
· Install a new boiler along with batteries and an inverter
· Replace windows
· Add roof insulation
At the same time, we decided to remove the old spiral staircase, separate the two lower halls and lower the ceiling – all measures which help to make the building more energy efficient.
We are indebted to our contractors who worked diligently to ensure everything was completed by the deadline of the end of March:
LAP Electrical, Dean Bonetta, Everitts, Spitfire Property Services and Ridge Roofing.
